Description

Indulge in this decadent Chocolate Turtle Cake featuring layers of rich chocolate cake, gooey caramel mixed with crunchy pecans, and a topping of caramel and chocolate sauces. Perfect for special occasions or when craving a luscious dessert, this cake combines classic turtle candy flavors in an easy-to-make layered treat.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Cake:

  • 1 box chocolate cake mix (plus ingredients listed on the box)
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 1 cup semi-sweet chocolate chips

For the Topping:

  • 1/2 cup caramel sauce
  • 1/4 cup chocolate sauce
  • Additional pecans for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Cake Mix: Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour a 9×13-inch baking pan to prevent sticking. Prepare the chocolate cake mix according to the package directions. Pour half of the batter evenly into the prepared pan.
  2. Bake the First Layer: Place the pan in the preheated oven and bake the first layer for 15 minutes. Once baked, remove it from the oven carefully.
  3. Make the Caramel Layer: In a medium saucepan over medium heat, combine the unsalted butter, packed brown sugar, and heavy cream. Stir constantly as the mixture heats. Bring it to a gentle boil and cook for 2 minutes, continuing to stir. Remove the pan from heat and stir in the chopped pecans to distribute evenly.
  4. Assemble the Layers: Pour the warm caramel-pecan mixture evenly over the baked cake layer in the pan. Sprinkle the semi-sweet chocolate chips evenly over the caramel layer. Then, pour the remaining cake batter over the top, spreading it carefully and evenly to cover.
  5. Bake Again: Return the pan to the oven and bake for an additional 20 to 25 minutes. To check doneness, insert a toothpick into the center of the cake; it should come out clean or with a few moist crumbs.
  6. Add Toppings: Allow the cake to cool slightly before serving. Drizzle the caramel sauce and chocolate sauce over the top of the cake. If you desire, sprinkle additional pecans on top for garnish and added crunch.

Notes

  • Ensure the caramel mixture is cooked at a gentle boil to prevent burning and achieve the right consistency.
  • Use good quality caramel and chocolate sauces for the best flavor and presentation.
  • Allow the cake to cool a bit before cutting for cleaner slices.
  • Store leftovers covered at room temperature or in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • This cake can be reheated slightly before serving to enjoy the gooey texture.
