Ingredients
Scale
For the Hamburger Steaks
- 1 pound ground beef (Use 80/20 blend for best results.)
- 1 small onion, finely chopped (Sautéing enhances flavor.)
- 1 clove garlic, minced (Add with onion for better taste.)
- 1/2 cup breadcrumbs (For binding the patties.)
- 1 egg (Acts as a binder.)
- Salt and pepper, to taste
- 1 tablespoon olive oil (For frying the patties.)
For the Creamy Dill Sauce
- 1 cup beef broth (Scrape the browned bits for flavor.)
- 1 cup heavy cream (Makes the sauce rich and creamy.)
- 2 tablespoons fresh dill, chopped (Use fresh for best flavor.)
- 1 tablespoon Dijon mustard (Adds depth to the sauce.)
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce (Enhances umami flavor.)
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon onion powder
Instructions
- Preparation: In a large mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, chopped onion, minced garlic, breadcrumbs, egg, salt, and pepper. Mix everything together until well incorporated to ensure the patties hold their shape and are flavorful.
- Form Patties: Divide the mixture into equal portions and shape each into a patty, making sure they are uniform in size for even cooking.
- Cook Patties: Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Place the patties in the skillet and cook for about 4-5 minutes on each side until they develop a nice brown crust and are cooked through. Remove patties and set aside.
- Prepare Sauce Base: In the same skillet, pour in the beef broth, scraping up all the browned bits from the bottom to infuse the sauce with rich flavor. Let it simmer for a few minutes to reduce slightly.
- Add Cream and Seasonings: Stir in the heavy cream, fresh chopped dill, Dijon mustard, Worcestershire sauce, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix well and continue to simmer the sauce until it thickens just enough to coat the back of a spoon.
- Combine Patties and Sauce: Return the cooked patties to the skillet, spooning and coating them thoroughly with the creamy dill sauce. Let everything cook together for an additional 2-3 minutes to meld the flavors and heat through.
- Serve: Serve the hamburger steaks warm, generously smothered in the creamy dill sauce. Ideal with mashed potatoes or steamed vegetables as sides.
Notes
- Use fresh dill for the best flavor; dried dill can be substituted but use sparingly as it is more concentrated.
- For leaner patties, choose ground sirloin, but adding a bit of fat helps keep them juicy.
- If preferred, the sauce can be thickened further by simmering longer or adding a cornstarch slurry.
- Rest the patties a few minutes after cooking to retain their juices when serving.
