This classic Shrimp Creole recipe delivers a flavorful and hearty dish featuring tender shrimp simmered in a spicy tomato-based sauce infused with Cajun seasonings and fresh vegetables. Served over fluffy long-grain white rice, it’s a comforting and vibrant meal perfect for any occasion.

Ingredients

Scale

Shrimp Creole

  • 1 lb (450 g) shrimp, peeled and deveined
  • 14.5 oz (410 g) can diced tomatoes
  • 1 medium bell pepper, diced
  • 1 medium onion, diced
  • 2 stalks celery, diced
  • 3 cloves garlic, minced
  • 2 tablespoons Cajun seasoning
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 2 cups (480 ml) chicken broth
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper, to taste
  • Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)

Rice

  • 1 cup (200 g) long-grain white rice
  • 2 cups chicken broth or water (for cooking rice)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the rice: Bring 2 cups of chicken broth or water to a boil in a saucepan. Add 1 cup of long-grain white rice, reduce heat to low, cover, and let it simmer for 18-20 minutes until the rice is tender and the liquid is absorbed. Remove from heat and fluff with a fork.
  2. Sauté vegetables: Heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil in a large skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion, bell pepper, and celery, cooking for 5-7 minutes until the vegetables soften and become fragrant.
  3. Add garlic and seasoning: Stir in the minced garlic and 2 tablespoons of Cajun seasoning. Cook for an additional 1-2 minutes, allowing the spices and garlic to release their aroma.
  4. Combine liquids and simmer: Pour in the diced tomatoes, Worcestershire sauce, and 2 cups of chicken broth. Stir everything together thoroughly, making sure the mixture is well combined.
  5. Cook the shrimp: Add the peeled and deveined shrimp along with 2 bay leaves to the skillet. Simmer the mixture for 5-7 minutes until the shrimp turn pink and are cooked through. Season with salt and pepper according to your taste preferences.
  6. Serve: Remove the bay leaves. Spoon the shrimp creole over the cooked white rice and garnish with freshly chopped parsley. Serve hot and enjoy your flavorful meal.

Notes

  • Adjust the amount of Cajun seasoning to control the spice level according to your preference.
  • For a richer flavor, you can substitute chicken broth with seafood stock if available.
  • Make sure not to overcook the shrimp to keep them tender and juicy.
  • This dish pairs well with crusty bread or a green salad for a complete meal.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
